Forested areas, which cover more than 60% of Slovenia, offer home and shelter to the three largest carnivores; the bear, the wolf and the lynx.
All three carnivores are protected by regulations, as Slovenia is working hard to preserve them. As a result, one rarely sees these wild animals while walking in the woods. Instead, nature lovers follow the paths of a bear, wolf or lynx together with a trained guide and observe the animals from a safe distance and learn how important it is to maintain responsible coexistence between nature and man.
About 1,000 bears live in Slovenia, so Slovenia is one of the countries with the highest density of brown bears in Europe. Slovenian national hockey team has the lynx depicted as a symbol on the coat of arms.
